"Brief descriptions, lively verse by a handful of poets, and most importantly, Krupinski's stunning art together answer the question, 'What Is New England?' Interfaith Dialogue and Peacebuilding

As the Christian, Muslim, and Jewish contributors to this volume have discovered firsthand, religion is better at fostering peace than at fueling war. Rarely, conclude the authors, is religion the principal cause of international conflict, even though some adversaries may argue differently. But religion can often be invaluable in promoting understanding and reconciliation—and the need to exploit that potential has never been greater. Drawing on their extensive experience in organizing interaction and cooperation across religious boundaries in the Middle East, Africa, Southeast Asia, Northern Ireland, and the Balkans, the contributors explore the formidable potential of interfaith dialogue. The first part of the volume analyzes the concept and its varied application: the second focuses on its practice in specific zones of conflict: and the third assesses the experiences and approaches of particular organizations. When organized creatively, interfaith dialogue can nurture deep engagement at all levels of the religious hierarchy, including the community level. It draws strength from the peacemaking traditions shared by many faiths and from the power of religious ritual and symbolism. Yet, as the authors also make plain, it also has its limitations and carries great risks.

Tales of the U'tanse

The Cerik raid on supernova-damaged Earth was a failure, but with a pair of humans in his claws, the leader hoped to breed a new race of slaves to replace the Builders, their technologists, that they had wiped out in a fit of revenge. Born of necessity, this pact between Abe and Sharon of Texas and the Cerik, was the genesis of the U'tanse, a psychically gifted splinter of humanity-trapped by violent masters and made to be slaves on a poisonous world. Read these tales from the first generations of a new humanity: James, the first boy born without telepathy in a world where everyone else could read him, has to save the life of a girl who was too telepathic. Karl, abandoned to die as too expensive to rescue, has to survive without being detected-no free U'tanse could be tolerated! Debbie, sent off to Festival where girls were swapped to keep inbreeding low, has to choose between a new life with another clan, or to leave with a strange man who offers an alternative on a secret project. Beginning with Star Time, Henry Melton is crafting a tale of human destiny, on Earth and across the stars- The Project Saga.

Wrecks Relics: The Album -1st Edition

Over the last four decades, one of the most successful brands in the field of aviation publishing has been that of Wrecks Relics. Each new edition of this biennial publication is eagerly awaited by aviation enthusiasts throughout the British Isles and beyond. This year will see the first publication of a new title which will from now on be produced in the years between the new editions of Wrecks Relics itself. Wrecks Relics, The Album, will achieve the same success as its parent and will be sought by the same broad cross section of aviation enthusiasts. The album will consist of a selection of largely unpublished photos covering the 40-year life span of Wrecks Relics. The same wide editorial parameters of the parent publication will be employed, defining in the broadest terms non-operational aircraft throughout the British Isles, ranging from beautifully restored museum exhibits to hulks used to train fire crews at airports. After a brief introduction, the first part of the book will look at the aircraft preservation scene in general over the years. This will be followed by a series of themed chapters on subjects such as British military types, foreign military aircraft, airliners and light aviation. One poignant section will look at the "ones that got away" -- aircraft which should have been saved but which, for various reasons, did not make it into preservation.

The US Strategic Pivot to Asia and Cross-Strait Relations: Economic and Security Dynamics

The rise of China as a powerhouse of the world economy not only caused many countries to deepen their economic integration with, but also face the challenge of, increasing assertiveness from China. While most Asian countries want good relations with both the U.S. and China, they need the U.S. to pledge security commitments to check China's hegemonic expansion. Under such circumstances, the American 'Pivot to Asia,' has become an important foreign policy measure to reassure its allies that it will strive to keep peace and stability in the region, crucial elements to economic dynamism.

The Future of Religion

Vattimo and Rorty consider the future of religion together with the political, social, and historical aspects that characterize our contemporary postmodern, postmetaphysical, and post-Christian world. Their work opens new ways of imagining what it is to be religious -- ways that emphasize charity, solidarity, and irony. This unique collaboration is notable not only for its fusion of pragmatism (Rorty) and hermeneutics (Vattimo) but also for its recognition of the limits of both traditional religious belief and modern secularism.

Renaissance Theatre: A Historiographical Handbook

Vince introduces readers to the sources of information available to the theatre historian, and to some of the methods that have been used in the interpretation of that evidence. He provides an analytical survey of the principal written and artifactual evidence for the history of the Renaissance theatres of Italy, Spain, England, and France. The book includes a discussion of the various types of evidence available to the theatre historian, with special reference to those sources that have proved to be of central importance, and an evaluative sketch of some of the most significant scholarship. Wherever possible, the reader is directed to original documents and sources that reproduce primary evidence. Each chapter concludes with a reference bibliography.

Do Your Laundry or You'll Die Alone

When Becky Blades sent her firstborn daughter off to Harvard, she knew the world?s top-ranked college would not be covering the most important material: how to be kind, happy, and appropriate in public: how to protect oneself from sock monsters, boring conversations, and scary dates: and why you should keep your clothes clean. So the day before classes started, Blades emailed a good-bye letter with motherly advice she had kept to herself for a year. Just in time for her youngest daughter?s graduation from high school, Blades illustrated the prose with her signature mixed-media artwork, creating a thought-provoking, conversation-starting book. With warmth, wit, and a hint of motherly sass, Do Your Laundry, or You'll Die Alone: Advice Your Mom Would Give If She Thought You Were Listening blends bite-sized morsels of coming-of-age common sense such as Keep at least one stuffed animal, and A bad attitude makes your butt look big, with tiny essays on topics like forgiveness and phone etiquette.

Communicator's Commentary: Deuteronomy (Communicator's Commentary Ot)

With great insight and power, Dr. John Maxwell shows us the pivotal importance of Moses' words not only to an Israel at the point of decision but to our modern world as well. If heeded, Moses' words would allow the people of God to reach their potential: if ignored, Israel's dreams would be dissolved. Deuteronomy appeals to a higher law and emphasizes obedience in worship, and Moses' urgent appeal and preaching style are fresh, alive, and applicable today as they were for the new nation of Israel.

The greater the range of the device, the further back in time one can look. The difference being the Observation Window looks back through the timeline of the earth rather than the stars. With light and sound waves capable of passing through it the window has the potential for massive disruption of the present status quo if mishandled. Project Thule is therefore, by direct order of the Führer, only to be used for intelligence gathering or criminal investigations..." Leigh Wilson didn't get the memo. The inventor of one of the most significant discoveries in human history and a leading member of the Reich's Technical Division she has kept a secret all her life. The Quantum World : Quantum Physics for Everyone

Common sense tells us that matter doesn't vanish into thin air, a particle and a wave have little in common, and good knowledge leads to good prediction. Yet when we move beyond the range of everyday experience and into the world of quantum physics, things prove to be very different: particles of matter can be annihilated, waves and particles are two faces of matter, and the outcome of some experiments is completely unpredictable. As Kenneth W. Ford shows us in The Quantum World, the laws governing the very small and the very swift defy common sense and stretch our minds to the limit. Drawing on a deep familiarity with the discoveries of the twentieth century, Ford gives an appealing account of quantum physics that will help the serious reader make sense of a science that, for all its successes, remains mysterious. He tells a good story while depicting both the subatomic world and the world of physics research as lively places populated by highly interesting characters. At the core of this book are the "big ideas" of quantum physics, including granularity (matter and some of its properties, like energy, are "lumpy"), wave-particle duality, the uncertainty principle, the nature of bosons and fermions, and superposition and entanglement (an atom can be in two or more states of motion at once). With strikingly clear writing, and with engaging illustrations by Paul Hewitt, The Quantum World imparts a sense of wonder and a knowledge of the strange laws governing the atoms, nuclei, and fundamental particles that inhabit the quantum world.

Those Who Walk in Darkness

In the near future, the world has become home to certain people with amazing genetic structures-giving them powers that make them frighteningly superior to normal humans. The Night Watchman was the first. Somewhere in San Francisco, he was out there-stopping a bank robbery, saving a kid from a runaway truck, whatever was needed. More 'superheroes' followed, though nobody called them that-but then came the bad ones, those who took pleasure in using their powers for ill. In response came the M-Tac squads: cops specially trained to fight these super-lethal enemies. Not a typical comic book superhero novel, John Ridley introduces a brave new world of heroes and villains, and shows that there's no such thing as a Good Guy or a Bad Guy.

El nuevo romanticismo (Spanish Edition)

Within the historic events in the 1930's Spain, among whose most important outcome stands the triumph of the Spanish Second Republic (1931), Jose Diaz Fernandez released his book of essays, El Nuevo Romanticismo (The New Romanticism), a compendium of his observations on art, literature, feminism, liberalism, and politics, all five understood as parts of the vital and social processes. Besides being a panoramic scan of the issues that marked the Spanish and European culture during the period between wars, this book expresses a defined will to guide the artistic Avant Gardes and to consolidate the foundations of its aesthetics, with the intention of enabling them to contribute, alongside the labor movement, political parties and social collectives, to the radical transformations of a society bound to give birth to a new romanticism, understood as a return to the humane. As part of the generation who opposed the Primo de Rivera dictatorship, founded magazines and weeklies such as Postguerra or Nueva España, and leftwing publishing houses such as Cenit, Oriente or Zeus, this project is conceived departing from the analysis of the Goya and El Greco works, futurism and other avant garde expressions, as well as politics, fashion, and the critique of reformist liberalism. The present release, that reproduces the first 1930 edition, sets in an historic perspective the various issues discussed by Diaz Fernandez while sketching the literary and artistic backdrops that frame the author's stance in his quest for a critical art and a revolutionary literature.

Literacy Is Not Enough : Essays on the Importance of Reading

The last two decades have witnessed a considerable reaction to the progressive utopianism of the 1960s. In education debates all over the English-speaking world, the talk is now of competition, back to basics, league tables, the demands of the market. This reaction has gone too far. Children need to be helped not only to achieve basic literacy but to read "critically," to discriminate, to evaluate, to enjoy great literature. It is not enough to help children to achieve literacy if this simply means they read only sufficiently well to be seduced by advertisers and tabloid newspapers. The essays in this book are by people engaged in the "promotion" of English, be they primary teachers or university lecturers, novelists or poets, publishers or social commentators, politicians or professors.

Wireless Network Security

Wireless networks technologies have been dramatically improved by the popularity of third generation (3G) wireless networks, wireless LANs, Bluetooth, and sensor networks. However, security is a major concern for wide deployments of such wireless networks. The contributions to this volume identify various vulnerabilities in the physical layer, the MAC layer, the IP layer, the transport layer, and the application layer, and discuss ways to strengthen security mechanisms and services in all these layers. The topics covered in this book include intrusion detection, secure PHY/MAC/routing protocols, attacks and prevention, immunization, key management, secure group communications/multicast, secure location services, monitoring and surveillance, anonymity, privacy, trust establishment/management, redundancy and security, and dependable wireless networking.

Heavily illustrated with colour photographs, it includes many of the author's own ideas to make embroidered pictures stand out sculpturally. Two very helpful charts allow you to tell at a glance how the basic stitches are achieved, and how they can be used creatively.

Excerpt: CHAPTER III Roseanne saw little of her mother in the time of trouble and turmoil which followed on her father's death. Standing some little distance away from the house where she lived was a house called the Beeches, in which there were several children with whom, on occasions, Roseanne had been wont to play. The mistress of the Beeches, a certain Mrs. Stenning, was a good-hearted woman, a little over opulent in physique and in dress, a woman who had aspired in vain to friendship with Elinor Crawford, who admired Roseanne's mother whole-heartedly, and envied her in a good-natured way, and who, now that disaster had fallen so heavily on George Crawford's widow, had appeared a veritable friend in need. She had arrived at the house the day following the tragedy and had carried Roseanne back with her in her car. " It isn't good for a child to be in such an atmosphere," she said to Mason : " and I am sure her mother doesn't want to be worried about her. Please tell her I have taken her to be with us, and I'll keep her as long as it is convenient to Mrs. Crawford to let her stay." Mason, who had looked scared and worried, for the tragedy which had fallen on the house had quickly been followed by news of more disaster, carried this message later to her mistress. Mrs. Crawford received it in the same calm way with which she listened to all that had to be said, and made no protest, nor did she express any gratitude for her neighbour's kind thought. " The fact is, she don't care one tiny bit," was Mason's opinion given freely to her fellow-servants. " If you ask me, I think she...

What Parents Need to Know About Sibling Abuse: Breaking the Cycle of Violence

Is what happens in your family just normal sibling rivalry or could it be called sibling abuse? This instructive guide will help you answer this question and help you break any cycle of violence, verbal or physical. The practical suggestions in this book will protect your children now, and help them become responsible adults. You will learn: * How to identify abusive behavior * How to prevent abuse in your home * How to know when to intervene This book shows that siblings hitting each other is not just “kids will be kids” and something to be tolerated unless it gets too raucous. It is one of the ways children learn that hitting another member of a family is intolerable, and therefore one of the causes of later domestic violence. Best of all, this book gives parents the tools to do something about it. Murray Straus, Ph.D., Family Research Laboratory, University of New Hampshire This comprehensive examination of sibling abuse not only uncovers its extent and impact, but offers parents sensible and useful advice. Sibling abuse is the cradle of family and interpersonal violence. Wiehe provides a timely and useful means of preventing the tragic toll of violence in our society. Murray Walker Scrapbook (Original Scrapbook)

Throughout the English-speaking world, and beyond, one man is an absolute legend in motor racing circles. He is more famous than many of the drivers, and much more loved than most. That man is, of course, Murray Walker. Murray has probably done more to popularise the modern phenomenon that is Formula One than any other single person. He has been the voice, and often the face, of Grand Prix racing for as long as any of us can remember. Drivers come and go, teams come and go, but Murray remained the one constant. Though he is world-famous for his involvement in Formula One, Murray enjoyed a highly successful parallel career in business while simultaneously commentating on, and popularising, such sports as motocross, motor cycle racing, rallycross, touring car racing, Formula 3 and Formula Ford. His extraordinary career even embraced commentating on power boats and trucks. It is all in this book, lavishly illustrated with over 500 images, from photos to cuttings to correspondence to trophies to very personal mementoes. Over 70 people spoke to author, Philip Porter, about this unique man. They range from mega-stars, like Lewis Hamilton, Sir Stirling Moss, Nigel Mansell, Sir Jackie Stewart, Jenson Button, Chris Amon, Paddy Hopkirk, Derek Bell, Andy Rouse, Geoff Duke, Giacomo Agostini and John Surtees to former colleagues in television who fascinatingly paint a vivid picture of the challenges of broadcasting through the decades. During his time commentating on F1, Murray formed two fantastic working relationships, first with charismatic maverick, James Hunt, and more latterly with the brilliant Martin Brundle. Both feature extensively in this book. Indeed, stars of every one of Murray's sports are widely quoted to give a truly rounded view of the man. There is even a fine collection of that species known as 'Murrayisms', some of which he may even have said! This very different book celebrates a man who exudes enthusiasm, fun and professionalism, a man who has had a wonderful life which he shares with us in these pages, with all the vibrant passion that you would expect of the unique Murray Walker.

High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles!

The Diary of a Scullery Maid

Although the story opens and closes in present-day Spain, the real beginnings are set in the early 1900s when, in Africa, the well-equipped army of the British Empire was being humbled by a few Boer farmers whose only uniform was a slouch hat and a bandolier over everyday work clothes. In England, with the wealth of the aristocracy in decline, Lord and Lady Blanchford-Carter decided to augment their dwindling finances by transforming part of their stately mansion into a high-class brothel for the upper echelons of society. Into this strange household came the young and innocent Helen Sarsfield to commence employment as a scullery maid. In Ireland, Helen's twin brother enlisted in the Connaught Rangers, and would soon depart for Africa, leaving behind his sweetheart in an Ireland rife with talks of insurrection: a place where James Connolly was reminding people that England's difficulty was Ireland's opportunity.

Markets Don't Fail!

Markets Don't Fail! addresses many of the popular arguments made by economists and other intellectuals against the free market. Using numerous examples as well as moral and epistemological arguments, this book claims that free market economies raise the standard of living of all individuals who live in them, and allow human life to flourish.

Law of Monopolies

The main object of this major work is to analyse the laws of monopolies and mergers in the United States , the European Community, Germany and the United Kingdom. It is not, however, possible to explain the rules on monopolies and mergers outside the context of the rules on restrictive arrangements (restraints of trade): many of the concepts under which the activities of a dominant firm may be treated as monopolistic derive directly from the categories of prohibited conduct under the cartel provisions. The work is essentially a country by country analysis of the anti-trust rules of the four jurisdictions mentioned. Accordingly the Sherman Act, the Clayton Act, Articles 85 and 86 of the Treaty of Rome, the German Law Against Restraints of Competition, the UK Fair Trading Act, Restrictive Trade Practices Act and Competition Act are all examined in detail. Where appropriate, subsidiary legislation also, in particular the various regulations issued by the European Council and the European Commission, are dealt with.

Augmented Urban Spaces (Design and the Built Environment)

There have been numerous possible scenarios depicted on the impact of the internet on urban spaces. Considering ubiquitous/pervasive computing, mobile, wireless connectivity and the acceptance of the Internet as a non-extraordinary part of our everyday lives mean that physical urban space is augmented, and digital in itself. This poses new problems as well as opportunities to those who have to deal with it.This book explores the intersection and articulation of physical and digital environments and the ways they can extend and reshape a spirit of place. It considers this from three main perspectives: the implications for the public sphere and urban public or semi-public spaces: the implications for community regeneration and empowerment: and, the dilemmas and challenges which the augmentation of space implies for urbanists. Grounded with international real-life case studies, this is an up-to-date, interdisciplinary and holistic overview of the relationships between cities, communities and high technologies.

Essentials of Medical Language

ESSENTIALS OF MEDICAL LANGUAGE FOR MODERN HEALTH CARE provides students with an active learning approach. It is Easy to Use because of the carefully planned content: students see all of the information they need on lay-flat two-page spreads. They no longer need to flip forward or backward to see definitions, word parts, or illustrations. Easy to Teach because of the visual, detailed lesson plans in the Instructor's Manual. Even novice instructors will have everything they need in one place. Easy to Implement because of the detailed syllabi and lessons plans as well as "How To Teach Medical Terminology" training on the OLC. Chapters in the textbook are organized by body system in accordance with an overall anatomy and physiology (A And P) approach. Lessons introduce and define terminology through the context of A And P, pathology, and clinical and diagnostic procedures/tests. The organization of the body systems into chapters is based on an ?outside to inside? sequence that reflects a physician?s differential diagnosis method used during an examination. To provide students with an authentic context, students actually step into the role of an allied health professional associated with each specialty. Patient cases and documentation are used to illustrate the real-life application of medical terminology in modern health care: to care for and communicating with patients, and to interact with other members of the health care team. The A And P organizational approach, used in conjunction an authentic medical setting and patient cases, encourages student motivation and facilitates active, engaged learning. The unique interior design of the text makes it much easier for students to learn medical terms and apply those terms in numerous exercises and applications. . . . .

So they called her in the hotel at Grindelwald, and "they" are sometimes more to be relied on than persons with better opportunities of forming opinions. Her father and mother had known her for seventeen years and never yet discovered what was the matter with her. "Mary is not very well" had been a favorite euphemism for her infantile naughtiness, and, as she became a tall, slight delicate-looking girl, the supposition that she was growing too fast was made responsible for any amount of contrariness in Miss Mary. In short, she had run the usual risks of the only child of wealthy parents, but even among spoilt children she was not what she might have been: for if a girl is self-willed and tyrannical, let her at least be so with a good grace and know how to make her despotism popular. She is young and fair, her every wish is gratified and her will is law: what right has she to gloomy, freakish, monosyllabic humors? And yet Mary could be so charming! She was notof a demonstrative nature: in her earliest years a honied plea for a kiss invariably brought a thundercloud to her baby brow, but she had a winning smile and sweet voice and a pretty manner of caress that was all her own unless it was borrowed from dumb creation. If you were very near and dear to her, and she in her happiest mood, she might put her arms around you and rub her soft cheek on yours, and you would be expected to find that as good as kissing. Whatever were your private sentiments about that or any other of her proceedings, it might be well to take her as she was and say noth...

Weather Lore: Folklore, Prediction, Weather, Millennium, History, Rhyme, Anecdote

High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! Weather lore is the body of informal folklore related to the prediction of the weather. It has been a human desire for millennia to make accurate weather predictions. Oral and written history is full of rhymes, anecdotes, and adages meant to guide the uncertain in determining whether the next day will bring fair or foul weather. For the farmer wanting to plant crops, for the merchant about to send ships on trade, foreknowledge of tomorrow's circumstances might mean the difference between success and failure. Prior to the invention of the mercury barometer, it was very difficult to gather numerical data of any predictive value. Even though there were devices such as the weather stick which gave some indication of moisture changes, the only instrument of any reliability was human experience.

Christian researches in Asia (1849)

Excerpt from book: clamorous for Bibles: they supplicated for teachers.— ' We don't want bread or money from you,' said they, ' but we want the word of God.'—Now, thought I, whose duty is it to attend to the moral wants of this people ? Is it that of the English nation, or of some other nation ?" 1 " Tritchinopoly, September 5th. " The first church built by Swartz is at this place: it is called Christ's Church, and is a large building, capable of containing, perhaps, two hundred people. The aged missionary, the Rev. Mr. Pohle, presides over this church, and over the native congregations at this place. Christianity nourishes: but I found that here, as at other places, there is a ' famine of Bibles.' The jubilee was celebrated on the 9th of July, being the hundredth year from the arrival of the messengers of the gospel. On this occasion their venerable pastor preached from Matth. xxviii. 19. ' Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost.'— At this station, there are about a thousand English troops. Mr. Pohle being a German, does not speak English very well: but he is reverenced for his piety by the English: and both officers and men are glad to hear the religion of their country preached in any way.—On the Sunday morning, I preached in Christ's Church to a full assembly, from these words, ' For we have seen his Star in the East, and are come to worship him.' Indeed what I had seen in these provinces rendered this text the most appropriate I could select. Next day some of the English soldiers came to me, desiring to know how they might procure Bibles. ' It is a delightful thing,' said one of them, ' to hear our own religion preached by our own countryman.' I am informed that there are at this time above twenty English reg...

Irish Agriculture: A Price History from the Mid-eighteenth Century to the Eve of the First World War (Royal Irish Academy Monographs)

Prices affect the living conditions of millions of people, hence their importance for an understanding of the past. In "Irish Agriculture: A Price history", Liam Kennedy and Peter Solar consider what was until relatively recently the principal means of livelihood for the majority of the country's population, shedding light on some major controversies in Irish history: the impact of the French wars, the significance of the Great Famine and the origins of the Land War.Prices and price change offer insights into people's behaviour in the past, and not just their economic behaviour. They help illuminate issues as diverse as production patterns, prosperity and famine, political and agrarian agitation and even such intimate detail as the timing of marriage. As the historian David Fischer has asserted: 'The history of prices is a history of change. 'The underlying data in this work, the product of more than ten years of archival research, are some 20,000 bimonthly price observations from the period 1755-1914 that have been processed into annual price series. The prices and price indices presented here furnish building blocks for historians and historically minded social scientists engaged in writing Ireland's history. This work also opens the way to more systematic comparisons of Irish and European economic experience, be it in terms of price inflation, living costs, market integration or market disintegration.

The Hill Readers

Excerpt from book: THE JAPANESE MIRROR1 T. Hasegawa Notk. This story, popular in Japan, illustrates the kind of tales that please the little brown children of the Flowery Kingdom. It is worth noting that children's stories of all lands are not markedly different. 5 A long, long time ago there lived in a quiet spot a young man and his wife. They had one child, a little daughter, whom they both loved with all their hearts. I cannot tell you their names, for they have been long since forgotten, but the name 10 of the place where they lived was Matsuyama. It happened once, while the little girl was still a baby, that the father was obliged to go to the great city, the capital of Japan, upon some business. It was too far for the mother and her little 15 baby to go, so he set out alone, after bidding them good-by and promising to bring them home some pretty presents. The mother had never been farther from home than the next village, and she could not help being 20 a little frightened at the thought of her husband's taking such a long journey: and yet she was a little proud, too, for he was the first man in allthat countryside who had been to the big town where the King and his great lords lived, and where there were so many beautiful and curious things to be seen. 1 From Japanese Fairy Tales. Tokyo. At last the time came when she might expect 5 her husband back, so she dressed the baby in her best clothes, and herself put on a pretty blue dress which she knew her husband liked. You may fancy how glad this good wife was to see him come home safe and sound, and how the 10 little girl clapped her hands and laughed with delight when she saw the pretty toys her father had brought her. He had much to tell of all the wonderful things he had seen upon the journey and in the town its...

Healing Anxiety With Herbs

More than 65 million Americans suffer annually from anxiety and insomnia, and one out of every two people will experience some form of mild to moderate anxiety for at least a two-week period during their lifetime. More people suffer from anxiety than any other mental health problem, yet fewer than than 25 percent of them receive adequate help. Until recently, the only choice for many was to suffer in silence or take synthetic, often addictive, tranquilizers and sleeping pills. Finally, there is an alternative. In Healing Anxiety with Herbs, leading psychiatrist and bestselling author Harold H. Bloomfield, M.D., presents a revolutionary approach that is safe, natural and medically proven. Dr. Bloomfield begins by explaining what anxiety is an exaggerated stress response stemming from the brain's alarm system and the many forms it can take, from muscle aches and nausea to chronic worry, persistent insomnia and even depression. He provides dozens of quick, easy-to-follow exercises along with his own proven Natural Self-Healing program to help individuals evaluate their own level of anxiety and discover the best way to treat it. As Dr. Bloomfield shows, in many cases the best and safest remedies are natural herbs. Medical studies have shown that kava can relieve mild to moderate anxiety as effectively as Valium-like tranquilizers but without sedation, memory impairment or threat of addiction. Hypericum (Saint-John's-wort), which can be just as effective as synthetic antidepressants for mild to moderate depression, can also be used to alleviate anxiety. Valerian extract can provide a good night's sleep without the morning hangover or rebound insomnia of prescription sleeping pills. Gingko biloba is a "brain booster" that is useful as a daily supplement for anyone over the age of 40 who is dealing with the angst of aging. The ginsengs and ashwaganda can help to strengthen the nervous sytem and protect against stress. Hospitals in Britain are using lavender oil aromatherapy to calm patients before surgery.

What is back of the war (pt. 523)

Excerpt from book: Ill THE GERMAN EMPEROR AND TWO OF HIS FIGHTING "TF IT will be convenient for you to delay your de- J. parture, the Emperor will receive you this afternoon," politely said a young officer attached to the Imperial Foreign Office. Booted and spurred, clad in service uniform, with sword at side, the bearer of this message strode hurriedly into the restaurant at the railroad station, where most of the officers at the Grand Headquarters take their meals. We were at luncheon, and the train was in the station, its starting time within less than five minutes. By so narrow a margin did this good fortune arrive! I had suggested to the Chancellor of the Empire, Von Bethmann-Hollweg, at the end of our conversation the evening before, that it would be a pleasant circumstance for me if I might meet the Emperor before leaving Germany. It was by the merest chance that the favorable result came so quickly, or at all: for the Emperor has not received any foreigner since the war began: he is at the front practically all of the time, and while, in Germany, all connected with the war are incessantly busy with systematic and methodical pur- Written at Berne, Switzerland, February 4, 1915. pose, yet the German Emperor himself is the hardest worked man in the whole Fatherland. Even the unsympathetic must admit that William II is at his task all the time. From one of these journeys, it appeared, the Emperor had just ret...

What My Father Gave Me: Daughters Speak

Passionate, compelling essays reveal how daughters see their fathers. Editor Melanie Little brings together seven outstanding women -- including Susan Olding, Jessica Raya and Saleema Nawaz -- to write brilliant, powerful accounts of father-daughter relationships during their teen years. These deeply personal narratives draw readers into raw, real-life experiences. One girl recalls the parade of men in her mother's life until a man named Al unexpectedly becomes the father she never had. Another father's abandonment leads his teen daughter to enter a string of doomed relationships with older men, fuelled by her "pilot light of pure hatred." Another reveals the harrowing secret she guarded as a teen: the sexual abuse she suffered at the hands of her father. One girl watches as the father she loves and respects struggles on the picket lines during a lockout at work and through an ensuing depression. Another daughter charts her own reckless behavior against that of her father's, in search of a way to break the cycle. Gutsy and honest, these true stories invite readers behind secret doors as they celebrate the power of words to connect to the teen experience.

Our Hundred Days in Europe (1891)

Excerpt from book: atre, and while I was talking with them a very heavy piece of scenery came crashing down, and filled the whole place with dust. It was but a short distance from where we were standing, and I could not help thinking how near our several life-dramas came to a simultaneous exeunt omnes. A long visit from a polite interviewer, shopping, driving, calling, arranging about the people to be invited to our reception, and an agreeable dinner at Chelsea with my American friend, Mrs. Merritt, filled up this day full enough, and left us in good condition for the next, which was to be a very busy one. In the Introduction to these papers, I mentioned the fact that more than half a century ago I went to the famous Derby race at Epsom. I determined, if possible, to see the Derby of 1886, as I had seen that of 1834. I must have spoken of this intention to some interviewer, for I find the following paragraph in an English sporting newspaper, "The Field," for May 29th, 1886: — "The Derby has always been the one event in the racing year which statesmen, philosophers, poets, essayists, and litterateurs desire to see once in their lives. A few years since Mr. Gladstone was induced by Lord Granville and Lord Wolverton to run down to Epsom on the Derby day. The impression produced upon the Prime Minister's sensitive and emotional mind was that the mirth and hilarity displayed by his compatriots upon Epsom race-course was Italian rather than English in its character. On the other hand, Gustave Dore, who also saw the Derby for the first and only time in his life, exclaimed, as he gazed with horror upon the faces below him, Quelle scene brutale I We wonder to which of these two impressions Dr. Oliver Wendell Holmes inclined, if he went last Wednesday to Epsom! Probably the well- known, etc., etc. — ...

Rank of a group: Cartan Subgroup, Mathematics, Group Theory, Cardinality, Generating Set of a Group, Dimension, P-group, Affine Group, Frattini Subgroup, Free Abelian Group

High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! If G is a finitely generated group, then the rank of G is a nonnegative integer. The notion of rank of a group is a group-theoretic analog of the notion of dimension of a vector space. Indeed, for p-groups, the rank of the group P is the dimension of the vector space P/?(P), where ?(P) is the Frattini subgroup. The rank of a group is also often defined in such a way as to ensure subgroups have rank less than or equal to the whole group, which is automatically the case for dimensions of vector spaces, but not for groups such as affine groups.

Thin Blue Smoke

LaVerne Williams is a reformed felon, ex-ballplayer, and owner of Kansas City's best barbecue joint. Ferguson Glen is an Episcopal priest and faded literary star, lover of God, women and liquor (but not necessarily in that order). Their lives intersect at LaVerne's diner - 'Smoke Meat', as the regulars call it. There they are joined by a cast of remarkable characters, including LaVerne's devoted right-hand man, A.B. Clayton: blues legend 'Mother' Mary Weaver: and Sammy Merzeti, a young man with a bloody past - and a bloodier future. "Thin Blue Smoke" is an epic redemption tale, the story of two men coming to terms with their pasts. It is also a novel about faith, race, storytelling, bourbon, the language of rabbits, and the finer points of barbecue technique. Heartrending and bitterly funny, it marks the arrival of a vital new voice in American fiction.

Tantric Transformation: Discourses on the Royal Song of Saraha

Tantric Transformation beautifully details Tantra, defining it as a 'map of inner consciousness'. In these exciting and ground-breaking discourses, the world-renowned Osho explains Tantric goals: the experience of cosmic expansion and divine wisdom. He describes the Tantra map of inner consciousness, including the 'Four Seals' or locks that open as we move higher in meditation. Speaking with profound wisdom and compassion, Osho demonstrates his genuine understanding of the fabric of our lives on earth, acknowledging both the glorious excess of our Western ways, as well as the doubt, despair, and guilt that are the legacy of our dualism. Through light, but thought-provoking anecdotes and lectures, Osho encourages each of us to turn inwards, develop as individuals, and discover the transformative Tantric language of love.

Taking Back What My Darkness Stole

I believe that life is a process of finding the true purpose of what God intended for us when He made the decision to create us. I also believe that God's way of showing us how to be committed teachers of His words and healers of His lost children's hearts is by teaching us that, even in the hardest lessons of our lives, there is great wisdom to be learned. Taking Back What My Darkness Stole offers to readers my personal memories of coming to terms with a painful and tortured past. Those memories are recorded in my journals as a narrative in which I openly detail many painful life experiences. Through reflection and prayer, I have successfully battled those demons and am now facing the struggles of trying to repair the damage that was done to my daughters and me. My desire is that my story could help show others like myself how to break those chains of darkness that bind them and defeat them from generation to generation. I would like to show them how to look at the roots of their pains and heal them from there instead of just medicating them with the many things that this world has given us to lose ourselves in. When we do that, then we can learn to embrace those who seem so lost to the outside world and help to show them how to find a way to start their own healing process. To let them know that if they follow the road that God has laid out for them, letting God lead them each step of the way, then they can live in victory and have joy, peace and love in abundance. And nothing and nobody on earth will be able to take those things from them.

Dear Son: A Father's Advice on Being a Man (Resurgence Books)

Today?s culture doesn?t encourage men to grow up. Everyone from pastors to op-ed columnists have described a crisis of masculinity, fostered by a media culture that uniformly make men the butts of jokes. Men are much more likely to give up on life than women. One indicator of this is the large gender difference in suicide rates?men are four times more likely than women to drop out of life. This points to a profound lack of effective mentoring of men, especially in the church. Dave Bruskas seeks to fill in this gap with this book. Two decades ago, Dave lost his only infant son to a congenital heart defect. That devastating loss fueled his desire to provide effective mentoring to young men. Dear Son contains the guidance and insights Dave would have given his son if he had lived through the milestones of growing up: from first dates to first jobs, from weddings to births, from friendships to funerals. Dear Son contains heartfelt wisdom for life?s journey, especially for guys?and for those who want to strengthen them.

It might be worth somethin'. Is that a deal or what? (Pink Floyd's "Echoes" in the background.) Buy the Book! It's only 10 dollars and I get 16 cents of that! LOL And forgive him for this: It might be very, very messy. Thanks. Mike Barden P.S. OK, I might have come up with a second deal. But I'll save that as a tease. This is a desparate move!

Berlin: Webster's Timeline History, 2000

Webster's bibliographic and event-based timelines are comprehensive in scope, covering virtually all topics, geographic locations and people. They do so from a linguistic point of view, and in the case of this book, the focus is on "Berlin," including when used in literature (e.g. all authors that might have Berlin in their name). As such, this book represents the largest compilation of timeline events associated with Berlin when it is used in proper noun form. Webster's timelines cover bibliographic citations, patented inventions, as well as non-conventional and alternative meanings which capture ambiguities in usage. These furthermore cover all parts of speech (possessive, institutional usage, geographic usage) and contexts, including pop culture, the arts, social sciences (linguistics, history, geography, economics, sociology, political science), business, computer science, literature, law, medicine, psychology, mathematics, chemistry, physics, biology and other physical sciences. This "data dump" results in a comprehensive set of entries for a bibliographic and/or event-based timeline on the proper name Berlin, since editorial decisions to include or exclude events is purely a linguistic process. The resulting entries are used under license or with permission, used under "fair use" conditions, used in agreement with the original authors, or are in the public domain.

Distributed computing

Distributed computing is a field of computer science that studies distributed systems. A distributed system consists of multiple autonomous computers that communicate through a computer network. The computers interact with each other in order to achieve a common goal. A computer program that runs in a distributed system is called a distributed program, and distributed programming is the process of writing such programs. Distributed computing also refers to the use of distributed systems to solve computational problems. In distributed computing, a problem is divided into many tasks, each of which is solved by one computer.

The flower and the bee

Excerpt from book: CHAPTER III FLOWERS POLLINATED BY THE WIND "Let us have eyes to see The new-old miracle: If it befell We viewed for the first time such wizardry, Each budding leaf were past belief, Ineffable." EARLY spring in temperate North America has its own peculiar charm. It is a period of conflict between two seasons, ushered in by shrill winds and rushing waters. Snow and ice still linger in the woods and cold days and frosty nights are common: but warmth and light are continually gaining. Among the many events characteristic of that old but ever new miracle, the resurrection of plant life, the most noteworthy is the bursting into bloom suddenly in early spring of whole forests of deciduous-leaved trees and shrubs before their leaves have appeared. Many of them are familiar species as the alders, birches, poplars, hazels, willows, hornbeams, walnuts, hickories, beeches, elms, oaks, and chestnuts. A part produce edible nuts, and a part are planted as avenue or ornamental trees. Most people never know that they bloom at all. This is partly because the flowers are small and dull-colored, and partly because they come at a season of the year when they are not expected. Why do the flowers expand before the leaves ? A few years ago no one could have answered this question. When Louis Agassiz, the famous naturalist and the founder of the Agassiz Museum at Cambridge, and Alexander Braun, who afterward became a distinguished botanist, were schoolboys together at Carlsruhe, in 1827, Braun in one of his letters sent his friend some "nuts to pick," among which was the question: "Why do some plants blossom before they put forth leaves?" Years before Gilbert White, the naturalist of Sel- borne, had pondered over the same problem. " Why," he writes, "do some plants bloom in the very...

Departmental Ditties Barrack-Room Ballads and Other Verses

Jack Barrett's bones at Quetta Enjoy profound repose: But I shouldn't be astonished If now his spirit knows The reason of his transfer From the Himalayan snows. And, when the Last Great Bugle Call Adown the Hurnai throbs, When the last grim joke is entered In the big black Book of Jobs, And Quetta graveyards give again Their victims to the air, I shouldn't like to be the man Who sent Jack Barrett there. THE POST THAT FITTED. Though tangled and twisted the course of true love, Tlris ditty explains No tangle's so tangled it cannot improve If the Lover has brains. E the steamer bore him Eastward, Sleary was engaged to marry An attractive girl at Tunbridge, whom he called "my little Carrie." Sleary's pay was very modest : Sleary was the other way. Who can cook a two -plate dinner on eight paltry dibs a day ? Long he pondered o'er the question in his scantly furnished quarters — Then proposed to Minnie Boffkin, eldest of Judge Boffkin's daughters. Certainly an impecunious Subaltern was not a catch, But the Boffkins knew that Minnie mightn't make another match. So they recognized the business, and, to feed and clothe the bride, Got him made a Something Something somewhere on the Bombay side. Anyhow, the billet carried pay enough for him to marry — As the artless Sleary put it: —" Just the thing for me and Carrie." Did he, therefore, jilt Miss Boffkin — impulse of a baser mind ? No! He started epileptic fits of an appalling kind. (Of his modus operandi only this much I could gather:— "Pears' shaving sticks will give you little taste and lots of lather.") Frequently in ...
